LODGE will take 3 ? hours, so just sit back and relax in your reclining

Day
3: Tipishca Lodge - Cusco City
Before
breakfast we take the catamaran; Lake Tipishca’s Giant River Otter family
is currently made up of 3 individuals; an adult breeding couple and their
offspring. When the young reach three years old, the young otters will
leave the family in search of their own territory. Adult Giant Otters consume
4kg (9lbs) of fish a day and the fish-rich Tipishca ensures their continual
presence. Such is their strength and team play that even large Black Caiman
and Anacondas will keep their distance from the Giant Otter family. Otters
are very territorial, but also very sensitive. The Tipishca Giant Otters
are accustomed to the presence of our catamaran, allowing us extended viewing
at a comfortable distance, although they will sometimes come closer to
investigate us, which is wonderful for photography! (Note: the Giant Otters
fish on Lake Tipishca every day of the year, apart from when it is flooded
by the river Las Piedras: a rare event, happening once or twice a year
for a few days at a time).
After
a good breakfast we will leave Tipischa for our final boat journey, speeding
down-river to Puerto Maldonado in good time to catch your onward flights
to Cusco. En route we will see a clay-lick located just 20 minutes down
river from the lodge. The clay-lick is itself a large area of bare clay
at the edge of the river, but it often attracts over 200 parrots in the
morning and a dozen or so Red and Green Macaws later on. The clay-lick
affords excellent opportunities for photography, especially in the months
of September and October. Macaws and Parrots are attracted to eat the clay
for a number of reasons, but principally it is the kaolin in the clay that
combats the toxins found in their seed diet. But it’s easy to see that
the parrots and macaws seem to enjoy the social aspect even more than the
clay! Here, sat in the trees waiting for their numbers to grow sufficient
for them to go down to the clay-lick, we can watch them in the trees playing,
fighting, squawking and being affectionate with their partners or sometimes,
even someone else’s!
Arriving
in Puerto Maldonado we will drive to the airport in time to catch your
flight to Cusco City. Finally you will have time to reflect on your amazing
rainforest experience as your plane soars and you see the immense green
carpet of the Amazon Rainforest stretch out below you.
In the afternoon,
we go for a city tour, visit the colonial cathedral, Santo Domingo,
which is built on some of the most precise Incan construction. You will
see many Incan and colonial constructions, the nearby Inca's bath,
Tambomachay and the mysterious semi-circular Kenko. You will explore
the ancient Sacsayhuaman. This amazing fortress of precisely fitted
giant stone was constructed by the Incas using some blocks which weigh
more that 350 tons. The guide tells you about the mysterious Incas, their
organizations, temples and palaces. At night we have a typical dinner
at a local restaurant enjoying a folkloric music show while we eat.
Day
4: Sacred Valley
In the morning we begin
our drive along the curvy roads to the valley. It takes about 40
minutes of spectacular scenery to arrive at Pisac, an old mountain
village. From the mountain heights, we hike to the ruins, following
an ancient Inca path which overlooks a cascade of terraces high above the
valley and river below. We arrive at the ruins, buildings which reflect
the most brilliant precision of the Incan stonemasonry. We drive
back down to the town center where we have time to browse the many colorful
stalls. Vendors sell handicrafts ranging from fine alpaca sweaters and
blankets to ornamental dishes, some of the finest pottery in Peru is found
here, scattered amongst the native vegetables and breads in this colorful
and diverse market. Continuing through valley we arrive at Ollantaytambo,
we hear the story of this Incan fortress and enjoy its old narrow stone
streets lined with sunken aqueducts that still function to carry pure mountain
water all year long. In the afternoon we return to Cusco stopping
by the village of Chincheros, this high Andean town is known for its quaint
colonial church as well as its artesian textiles. Later we return to Cusco
for a hot shower and dinner.
Day
5-6: Machu Picchu
Today we board our train
for the scenic, three hour, zig-zagging journey into the lush Urubamba
valley. We arrive at the little village of Puente Ruinas where we
will be spending the night in a comfortable hotel. After we get situated,
we go out to explore this wondrous cloud forest. Later we enjoy the
brilliant night sky while bathing in the natural hot springs. Early the
next morning we will take the bus for the ascent to the sacred refuge of
Machu Picchu, “the lost City of the Incas.” Here you can listen as your
guide recounts the many accomplishments of the Incas as your tour the ruins
of towers, temples, and ceremonial baths. After lunch you will have to
time to enjoy the Incan citadel for yourself. Later in the afternoon
we take the train for our return back to Cusco.
