Itinerary
DAY 1: Cusco to Cloud Forest
Leaving Cusco early in the morning, course members begin an 8-hour journey over the Andes by bus. You climb to the highpoint of the Manu Biosphere at about 3,530 m before descending to the cloud forest. In these mysterious surroundings you take a hike to the lek of the incredible cock-of-the-rock, to see the ‘performance’ of the males right under their eyes. You spend your first night in the rustic lodge Posada San Pedro (appr. 1,600 m).
DAY 2: Cloud Forest to Pantiacolla Lodge
The bus ride continues to the tropical lowland rainforest. In Atalaya there is a change to a motorized canoe, to go down the Alto Madre de Dios River. Around midday members arrive at Pantiacolla Lodge. Unpack and relax. Before dinner members receive each their own essential survival kit. After dinner there is a briefing for the plan of the next few days as well as safety information. The rest of the night is to relax and soak up the jungle.
DAY 3 & 4: Basic Survival Training
After breakfast a short talk of the day’s activities. You leave the lodge with day packs to go walkabout in the jungle. There are explanations about flora and fauna as you go and an ongoing discussion of survival kit usage. Lunch is at a scenic location and afterwards you return to the lodge. The local guides explain about fishing and have you practice afterwards. After dinner there is a consolidation talk of flora and fauna encountered during the day and its use in survival situations.
DAY 5: Advanced Survival Training
After breakfast a short talk of the day’s activities and a talk on the pieces of kit that are needed for sleeping out in the jungle. Today you will be leaving the lodge, trekking to a site in the jungle and pitching hammocks, which you will sleep in for the next few nights. Members will be given hammocks and bashas, and have some time to pack all the kit that they need for the next few days. You leave the lodge midmorning and trek for the next few hours to get to the camping site (Base Camp). On site, it will be explained how to set up hammocks, mosquito nets etc. and members will be paired to do so. After a late lunch, you talk about camp hygiene and toilet procedures. Then you go with the local guides to consolidate fishing skills. You return to BC for personal admin (washing etc.) and dinner.
DAY 6: Advanced Survival Training
Survival skills day. After breakfast a talk about the day’s activities. Then you walk about in the jungle to practice both shelter building techniques as well as building small controlled fires to cook on and boil water. The day will be focused on this, with lots of hands-on, practical applications of the skills taught. Fishing will be practiced again. The “pyramid of survival” will be discussed, as well as setting the scene for the survival scenario.
DAY 7 & 8: Survival Scenario day 1 and 2
Participants will take down hammocks and bashas and pack them away. Members are taken individually by boat along the river and dropped off at a designated position. Here you will spend two days in the survival scenario: “the boat has crashed and you have to survive in the jungle by yourselve till help arrives.” Participants must use all skills and knowledge learned over the last few days, like erecting shelters, finding drinking water, fishing, building a small fire etc. so as to make the whole experience as comfortable as possible to them. Participants will be given a small pack of equipment (which will contain a 2-way radio for emergency use, an emergency whistle and first aid kit), as well as their belt kit (machete, water bottle, fishing kit etc.) but are not allowed to bring anything else – 1.e. no hammock, basha etc.). This is to replicate in some way what it would be like in a real survival situation, and to get members right next to living with nature. This will only further your respect for the rainforest. Members are responsible for catching fish (if at all!), or eating other things from the forest (e.g. palm heart)
DAY 9: Rescue Day
Members are rescued by boat at midmorning and brought back to Pantiacolla Lodge for some needed food, sleep and to wash. Rest of the day is to recover. In the evening there will be celebration drinks!
DAY 10: Return to Cusco
Back on the boat early in the morning, you head upstream to Atalaya where your bus is waiting to take you back over the Andes to Cusco.
